Setting up your wireless home video surveillance system is not as difficult as you might think. As technology has increased, cameras are getting better picture and sound, and have become quite simple for homeowners to install themselves. In most cases, all you need to do is find a good camera kit and follow the instructions! Here are a few tips for setting up your home security cameras.
1. Security Check

First, determine where you need cameras. Common areas to keep an eye on are front and back doors, and other points of entry that are hidden from view. You may want to have a few that monitor your backyard, garage area or other areas where a burglar can come on to your property. Keep in mind that the cameras will need to be placed at appropriate distances, so they have a clear, focused view of the area you want to watch. Take a few measurements, so you know the areas that you want covered.
2. Camera Selection
You can purchase home security camera kits at many home and electronics stores, but be sure to read the specs before you buy. Make sure they can be set to cover the areas you need. Also, make sure that you can add to this system if you want to install more cameras later on. Understand that wireless cameras still require a power wire, and need to be relatively close to outlets... usually about 4-6 feet. You may want to consider getting cameras that have pan and tilt capability, so you can move the cameras remotely and scan a larger area.
3. Installing Your System
If you're concerned about wire tampering, consider having a professional install your cameras. They can drill inside your walls, so your power cords, outlets and adaptors are concealed. To mount your cameras, simply drill into your walls and use screws to mount them. For outdoor cameras, protect them with a weatherproof housing.
4. Set-Up
Each camera needs to be set to its own channel. Usually, these are lettered or numbered. So your front door camera could be channel A, and your back door camera channel B.
Put the wireless receiver next to your TV and connect it with the supplied cables. If you prefer to have your security cameras hooked up to your computer or DVR, you can do this as well (as long as your system supports it). You can connect your security cameras to your computer using digital video capture devices.
Once you're connected, make sure you can view all of your cameras and that the view is as you want it. Go through each camera, and adjust the viewing angle as needed.
5. Monitoring
You can hook up a VCR or DVR to record from your TV. Or, if you are using a computer to monitor your home video surveillance system, use video capture software so you can keep an eye on your home over the internet. This is a great feature if you are away from home frequently.
